Daily Devotional for Nov. 10, 2004 - Quiet

"Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still." Psalm 4:4

This morning, I ventured to our nearest large city which is about 45 minutes away. I went to a mothers' group, a used bookstore and somewhere to eat. I'm absolutely exhausted, especially after you add in whatever little sleep I got during the night. My ears are almost ringing from the sounds of the car and my daughter asking every question imaginable. Now we are home, she is taking her nap and the only sounds I hear are the refrigerator, the fan of my computer and maybe an occasional passing car. It is almost totally quiet. On occasion, my mom will take my daughter for an overnight visit or just a few hours on a Saturday morning. It is almost eerie with the house being so quiet. Too much quiet is usually bad, but not enough quiet is even worse. We all need some alone time to talk to God and compose ourselves. It can be very hard, if not impossible, but it is so worth it if we are able.

Jesus recognized the value of getting away from others and communing with God.

"And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he want out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed." Mark 1:35

Try to make some time each day for quiet reflection and prayer. For mothers to young children, it is most likely going to be in the late night or early morning hours when all is asleep. Reflect on how you are spending your time and how to improve your Christian walk. Most importantly, spend time talking to God. Make it a priority, and I believe you will have increased peace throughout the day.
