"The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil." Proverbs 31:11
One of the very basics of a good marriage is trust. Being able to have true trust in one another cuts out so many other sins such as jealousy and envy. But to receive one's trust, one must actually be trustworthy. When you break someone's trust, it can become almost impossible for them to wholeheartedly trust you again. This becomes even more vital in the marriage relationship, particularly in a world where adultery and divorce is so rampant. As wives, we earn our husband's trust through our behavior.
This verse seems to particularly deal with financial/world matters. Spoil is simply material possessions taken from others. Many times it is used in reference to taking goods from enemies beat in battle, but it also used in reference to goods taken through sinful robbery. Thus, husbands who can trust their material possessions to their wives have no want to steal from others to better themselves because their possessions were misused.
As managers of the home, our husbands put trust in us not to overindulge and overspend. For some of us, this is more a problem than others. Several are sinking daily into debts, many times by overuse of credit cards and quick loans with high interest rates. Wives must make sure the family earnings they are trusted with are used to the greatest extent without waste. We should take great care in not overspending and taking care of the needs of the family over frivolous wants. When we fail to do this, we can lead our husbands down a path which cause them to sin. While we are all responsible for our own actions, we need to strive to keep our loved ones away from dangerous paths when it is within our power.
