Daily Devotional for Nov. 16, 2004 - Blessing of Children

"Lo, children are a heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with enemies in the gate." Psalm 127:3-5

Children are a joy given from God. Somehow, we've turned children into being a burden instead of a rich blessing. Abortion is rampant throughout our country and the world, killing these unborn babies. People used to pray fervently for a child, such as Samuel's mother Hannah, instead of praying to not get pregnant. We worry too much about how we can afford these children and not enough about raising Godly children to tell others about his message.

"Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers." Proverbs 17:6

"For thou shalt eat the labor of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee. Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table." Psalm 128:2-3

"He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the Lord." Psalm 113:9

A second idea to glean from Psalm 127 is that your children are "on loan" from God. This children are His, but He places them in our care. Let us treat our children and teach them like they are truly God's own. What will we do with this inheritance given to us?

Find the joy in raising your children, enjoying them while they are under your care for such a short period of time. Love them with all that you have, and teach them about God every day. Enjoy the smiles and laughter of the toddler, and hearing the pitter patter of feet coming down the hall (especially if you have wood floors!) Guide your teenagers into becoming Godly men and women, soon to raise a household of their own. Feel extremely blessed that you have those joys, when so many families ache for their lost babies or empty wombs.
