Daily Devotional for Nov. 17, 2004 - Meekness

"Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law." Galatians 5:23

This verse is the last of the list of fruits of the spirit in Galatians 5. Today we want to focus on meekness.

What is meekness? The best definition of meekness in the Bible is what it isn't.

"To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, showing all meekness unto all men." Titus 3:2

This word is also used in I Timothy 3:3 as a requirement for bishops. According to Strong's, the word is a compound of the negative participle and the word that means a battle, fighting.

When should we use meekness?

1) When trying to win souls to God

"And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; and that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will." II Timothy 2:24-26

Women are also instructed to win their non-believing husbands to God through a quiet and meek spirit (I Peter 3:4).

2) When restoring a lost soul

"Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such a one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, let thou also be tempted." Galatians 6:1

Paul also talks about using the spirit of meekness to confront those who have strayed from the truth in I Corinthians 4:21. It is very easy to get into a yelling match with someone when you want to "prove them wrong." God shows us through the Bible that he does not intend for us to proceed that way as we try to save others.

3) Our everyday lives

"But thou, man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

Today, and each day, let us try to show meekness to our husbands, our children and our fellow man.
