Daily Devotional for Nov. 19, 2004 - Love of Money

"For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows." I Timothy 6:10

What a powerful statement is this verse found in I Timothy. If you stop and think about it for a minute, you can truly see how the love of money is the root of all evil. We neglect the Lord's work in order to make more money to spend of frivilous things. Many lie, cheat, steal and even kill to get their hands on as much money as possible. Jealousy and covetousness many times leads back to the love of money. The list goes on and on.

Men of God are told not to be "greedy of filthy lucre," as elders and deacons are required not to behave in such a manner.

"Not given to wine, no strikers, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;" I Timothy 3:3 (Also see Titus 1:7)

"Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;" I Timothy 3:8

As we enter this season of giving, we are also consumed by the receiving part as well. We make our Christmas lists and dream of what we could possible get this year that will top last year. Or, on the other side, we try to come up with the perfect gift for a loved one, where the expense is supposed to show how much we care. Instead of focusing on money, try to focus on giving time and love to the ones you care about. So many times it is the very little things that make a memory special and causes it to last for a lifetime.

Also for today, try to evaluate your life to see where you see the love of money slipping in to take control of your life and try to free yourself. What are your weaknesses when it comes to material possessions and how can you curb them? How can you teach your family not to fall into the traps of the "love of money?" Spend time with God in prayer today to help rid your life of this snowballing sin.
