Daily Devotional for Dec. 3, 2004 - Forgiveness

"Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye." Colossians 3:13

It can be so difficult to forgive those who hurt us, but it is a necessary part of the Christian life. We are to forgive others as fully and completely as we have been forgiven.

"And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you." Ephesians 4:32

This type of forgiveness is vital for two key reasons. One, we will not be forgiven if we do not forgive others.

"For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses." Matthew 6:14-15

Two, not granting another forgiveness allows Satan to get a foothold in our lives.

"To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ; Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices." II Corinthians 2:10-11

Just like God's forgiveness, our forgiveness should remain limitless.

"Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Untill seven times: but, Until seventy times seven." Matthew 18:21-22

Try to free yourself from the grips of Satan by freely forgiving those who have wronged you in the past and the present. Make a list of grudges you have held and destroy them never to be thought of again.
