Daily Devotional for Dec. 14, 2004 - Let Your Light Shine

"Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."

Our electricity went out for an hour or so during the night last night. Luckily, it wasn't so dark a night that you couldn't see anything, but I still fumbled around the house to find a flashlight. We usually keep one on our kitchen bar near the telephone so it is easy to find in such a situation. This one little light can mean the difference between stumbling blindly in the dark or easily making your way throughout the house. The bulb is probably no bigger than a quarter-inch, but the light emitted fills the room.

Darkness and light is powerful imagery used all through the Bible, even in the first words we have recorded from God.

"And God said, Let there be light: and there was light." Genesis 1:3

And, God repeatedly tells us how he wants us to be of light by following his word.

"But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble." Proverbs 4:18-19

"For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life." Proverbs 6:23

Darkness and lightness are opposites, so we must be one or the other.

"Ye are all the children of light, and children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness." I Thessalonians 5:5

"Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?" II Corinthians 6:14

We know, however, that light always overcomes darkness. Everyone contains a powerful light that can be shared with the world. Even the tiniest of lights can make a big difference in how the world is seen. We should let this light shine so all may see it and give God the glory for it.
